#Wind Tower, Wind Wand, Wind Motion Wall, Road Bollards

SHANGHAI, CHINA

The H07-01A plot in Lingang New Area, Shanghai, covers an area of approximately 16,000 square meters with a total construction area of up to 47,400 square meters. It is home to an internationally renowned artificial intelligence laboratory developed by the Parkland Group. This building is not only a scientific research center but also a great example of the seamless integration of technology and art.

UAP was invited to design a series of art installations for the community, which included the iconic Wind Tower, the imaginative Wind Wand, three Wind Motion Wall, and fifteen Road Bollards. These installations were designed by Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM), and UAP assisted in the design, fabrication, and installation. These installations not only enhance the cultural atmosphere of the community but also showcase the boundless possibilities of technology and art.

As you enter the Scientist Community, you are immediately drawn to the Wind Tower, which stands at a towering 11 meters in height. When viewed from the south, the warm-toned aluminum panels glisten in the sunlight, swaying with the wind like ripples on a lake. From the north, the cool-toned aluminum panels provide a serene beauty reminiscent of a deep night sky. The Wind Tower is an artwork and an intelligent device that can perceive and respond to environmental changes in real-time. Through its swinging amplitude and frequency, viewers can intuitively feel wind direction and speed changes.

Moving towards the riverside area, the artwork named Wind Wand captivates with its unique design and conceptualization, seamlessly integrating the power, speed, direction, and endless rhythms of the wind. The sculpture is made up of around thirty hemispheres and ten complete spheres, arranged in an orderly yet diverse manner, resembling stars in the sky. Additionally, the artwork includes a wind speed detector that shows real-time meteorological data such as wind speed and direction. This adds a touch of technology and practicality to the artwork and allows viewers to experience the presence and changes of the wind directly.

Additionally, at the community's southeast and northeast corners, three Wind Motion Wall and fifteen Road Bollards are scattered around. These installations, through the swinging of aluminum panels, demonstrate the wind's dynamic and vitality, continuing the Wind Tower's design concept. Among the three Wind Motion Wall, two utilize large aluminum panels, while the other employs smaller, more delicate ones. Carefully selected and combined from the gradient colors of the Wind Tower, the Wind Motion Wall presents the most representative of four shades. On the other hand, the road bollards adopt two colors from the Wind Tower, highlighting their three-dimensionality and spatial presence through simple lines and color contrasts.

In the Scientist Community of Lingang, the fusion of technology and art reaches new heights. They are not just artworks but also representations of the integration of technology and nature, sensibility and rationality. Here, viewers can experience the convenience and efficiency brought by technology and find inspiration and solace in the harmonious coexistence of art and nature.
